Running Serene

Week 4: Monday February 16, 2015 - Nine weeks to Boston (70 run & 10k walk)

Monday - 10k walk. Local coastal walk to Bungan Beach. It has been some time since I have ventured north. Coastline is stunning at this time of the year. Lots of house building activity is evident in most streets I passed.

Tuesday - hills. I got out to my local hilly grassed area just before the dog walkers were out. Brilliant  and still  morning with a bright quarter moon visible in the pre-dawn light.  I ran 15*30 second hill repeats in bare feet on the dewy grass. Hill did not feel as difficult as I remembered. Maybe I did not run hard enough?  It felt really good to run in bare feet on the wet grass. It was a strange feeling putting my running shoes back on, to run home. They felt leaden and clumsy on my feet.

Wednesday - pace run, 14km to Long Reef in 1:20. Typical February morning, warm and humid. My run was less than excellent. Really felt like a struggle all the way. My head was bargaining with my legs for a walk break. Both Achilles were painful with niggling bone pain in R foot. Long Reef headland had quite a crowd for a spectacular sunrise. Unfortunately I did not take a camera.

Thursday - intervals at North Head. I love this time of the year, warm and humid with shortening days reminding me that cool weather is not far off. I want to make the most of the warmth. Ran 2*3min, 1*6min interval with 30 sec standing rest, all at 4.40 pace. Ran in lower profile  shoes and had breakfast before the run. Made a huge difference to how I felt.   Very happy with the whole session. Followed up with a swim at Fairy Bower with huge swell over topping the pool.

Rain at Curly did not hang around for very long

Fairy Bower pool

Fairy Bower walk - wet and over-topping
Friday - rest. Visit #2 with physio. Troubled with right foot just not behaving normally, on top of the ongoing Achilles niggles. I am worried about another stress fracture. Visited physio and after much painful manipulation  and acupuncture, unrestricted foot movement was restored and I was sent off with lot more exercise to do to strengthen my weak and rubbery core.

Saturday - Blue Mountains Trail. I ran from Explorers Tree, Katoomba to Cox's River and back, total distance of 30km in 4 hrs and 20min. So happy to be back in the mountains. Today was absolutely perfect running conditions, noticeably cooler with a light drizzle. A small turnout from the training group with many needed to run closer to home.  Anyhow after we started at 7 am I was pretty much on my own until the last 8km where I caught up with Trav and we chatted and enjoyed the trail for a few k's until the purgatory of a Nellies Glen ascent. I tried my race day nutrition and all seemed to work well except for feeling heavy for the first 10km. Achillies were tight and painful from start to finish. Really enjoyed the descent to Cox's River. It was peaceful and quite with only the sound of light rain falling with bellbirds and whipping bird whistles breaking the silence.  It cannot get any better. My cup of happiness was overflowing. Misty Blue Mountains were at their very best today. So happy I made the trip.

Small group at the start, a few more turned up after.

That is the last I saw of most of the group.

Loved running in the light drizzle with mist hugging the mountains

On the way back. Katoomba is somewhere on the escarpment shrouded in mist.

Wildflowers on the trail going along Cox's River.

looks like it gets cold here in winter. On the way to Cox's River.

In 3 weeks this will be full of runners buzz!

So cold at Govetts Leap where I went to have my lunch after he run, I lost feeling in my fingers.

Love the misty Blue Mountains

Serenity and giving thanks!
Sunday - recovery road run. Ten Bridges STaR run with Sydney Striders, I ran a very hilly 13.5km from Lane Cove to Kirribilli and back.  Very pleased to overcome my inner voice that kept telling me to stay home and do a short local run, which I knew would not happen.  I felt great for about the first 10km and then was pleased to be heading back to the start line.  I was so exhausted I fell asleep in the car waiting for Hammer to finish his long run.

A great weekend with solid running. So far so good :-).

Blue Skies

Week 3: Monday February 9, 2015  - Ten Weeks to Boston (40km run & 30km walk)

Monday-rest day.

Tuesday - intervals 6x2min,30sec at 75%, jogging rest in between followed by 90sec*2 even paced at 75%. Warm and humid morning when I started. Had a little bit of bruising on my R knee from a fall last weekend. This made me a bit nervous about running hard on it as it was bit painful. Got the warm up and intervals done, averaging 4.53 pace westward and 4.37 on the return 2min laps. And 4.38 on the 90sec intervals. Decided to do fast walk to cool down, just in case.

Wednesday-rest day

Thursday- long walk, 25km in 5hrs. I am running out of time to get ready for Coastrek on 6th March and Six Foot Track marathon the week after. As both will be run/walk for me I went out for along undulating walk to condition the legs. Walked along the coast from Georges Heights to Kirribilli and back. I have run sections of this route before but walking allowed me to take in the surrounding landscape. The coves and waterways with bobbing boats and little cafes along the way are just so beautiful. I really cannot think of anywhere that has so much natural beauty alongside urban development and on the doorstep of a large city. Maybe the north shore of San Francisco comes close? I am in love with my own city, it really is so stunning.

Friday - pace run, 10km in 57.32. It was nice to have the quite, early morning stillness all to myself,as I ran to Collaroy and back. Felt like hard work in the humidity even though there was a cool breeze. Finished the run just as the it started to get light.

Saturday - disaster. Slept in and missed an important group run. Never happened to me before. Felt way beyond disappointed.

Sunday - LSD, ran 20km on the Pymble Pushover and walked 4.5k through the trail at the end. Very happy to be back on the road. And have a consistent effort on a  hilly run with an average pace of 6.20. The walk through the bush section was beautiful with mist still hanging around in the low lying sections. Nice way to cool down.

Back to work Tuesday

Week 2: Monday February 2, 2015  - Eleven Weeks to Boston (60km)

Monday - rest day, and just as well. I was stiff and sore after the long  run last Sunday. However the Achilles felt remarkably good. So that is a big plus. I was reviewing my training diary for the 2007 Boston Marathon and realised that even back then I had Achilles and calf issues. Funny how I don't remember that. Just remember the high hamstring pain.  So onwards and upwards.

Tuesday - first interval session.  I did 8 by 1min intervals with 45sec standing rest. Great to be back running quicker. I managed 4.24  westward and 4.15 eastward pace at North Head. Happy with that. It was hard to start the warm up as my legs were still very stiff from the downhill pounding over the weekend.  Overcast morning and a bit cool for this time of year. Saw the sun trying to peak out over the clouds at Curly. Will have to come back here to take some more photos.

Cloud cover making for a grey city scape.
Wednesday - hospital day. Enjoying a different hiker story after reading Wild last month.

Thursday - very easy 7kms at North Head. Ran a new route from Fairy Bower and North head including the decommissioned Defence land. I discovered a whole new landscape I had never new existed. A huge hanging swamp, a building with sculpture studio and a beautiful arty cafe worth revisiting and an old Quarantine station cemetery dating back to the 1800's.  Followed the run with a swim at Fairy Bower -   waves were over topping the pool. Beautiful!

Friday - 10k easy run around Lake Narrabeen with BEXI run club was another easy run. Great to run with new people and chat about things other than running.

Saturday - 12km of hill running technique drills on the Six Foot Track including a session on the descent to Caves House and a second session on the steep short hills between Caves Rd crossing and the deviation.

Beautiful flower covered rocky boulder on the trail descending to Caves House

Sunday - 24 km trail run on the Six Foot Track from the Deviation to Little River and back.  Average pace 8.25 which included the Pluviometer climb. Perfect for 7hr pacing duties come race day. The mountain trails are surrounded by wildflower blooms and it is an absolute joy to be out there.

The end of the Pine plantation is always a welcome sight.
